Bloody New Year

So what does this new year have in store for us? well for one 2009 will feature the resurrection of an infamous cannibal flick from Deodato, as he brings us his sequel/remake of his flesh munching flick entitled simply "Cannibals", certainly my most anticipated release of the year, although I do hold a worry that it won't be able to match the controversy and impact of the original, but who knows.

The continuation of the cash pulling sequels carries through to this year with a list including "The Grudge 3", "The Ring 3", "Jeepers Creepers 3", "Underworld 3", "Stigmata 2", "Vacancy 2", "Silent Hill 2", the next "Living Dead" installment from Romero and possibly the arrival of the end of trilogy "Twilight Watch" among others.
The remake trend will also continue to infuriate horror fans with their favourite classics being trampled over by Hollywood money, on the way will be "Friday The 13th", "Hellraiser", "The Birds", "Evil Dead", "Poltergeist", "My Bloody Valentine" and the aforementioned "Cannibals", it certainly seems that no classic is immune.

But despair not, as this year will also feature numerous 'originals' from people like Rob Zombie with his next anticipated flick "Tyrannosaurus Rex", Neil Marshal's "Drive", "Daybreakers" from the directors of the brilliant Aussie flick "Undead", the personally overrated Eli Roth will hopefully deliver something worthwhile with his latest film entitled simply "Cell", Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven give us their latest visions with "From A Buick 8" and "25/8" respectively, "Murder Set Pieces" director Nick Palumbo brings us "Frigid" with a possible release this year, "Severence" director Christopher Smith's new flick "Triangle", the interesting looking Norwegian flick "Dod Sno" ("Dead Snow") looking to show its head too, as well as the overdue release of "My Name Is Bruce" to DVD, and no doubt an interesting number of releases from the Unearthed Films label and the like, not to mention countless others that may prove worth keeping an eye on.

So fear not people, horror is going nowhere and in fact looks stronger than ever as we enter this new year.
May the blood and violence continue.

The
BloodandFear Horror Pick 2008

The best film (that I've seen) in 2008, whether it be a cinema viewing or new DVD release. Philosophy Of A Knife was easily the most memorable film I've seen all year, and in fact for many years, it's one of those film experiences that I'll never forget, partly because of its uncomfortable reality based vicious imagery and also its daunting four hour running time making for quite the macabre endurance test, not to mention one of the best scores I've heard in a film, it just ticks all the right boxes. The film deserves to get a wider audience from anyone brave enough to tackle it, and hopefully most won't simply dismiss it as a shock piece, but sadly it will likely remain a film for the underground. A deserved winner of BloodandFear's horror pick of 2008, and in the end quite an easy choice.
